After enduring a lengthy road trip, and competing at 6500’ elevation, the SMHS boys varsity soccer team prevailed once again. North Tahoe High school played host to the visiting Panthers and found the visitors to be quite a challenge. Strong midfield play by seniors Jordi Higuera, Kam Calhoun, and Ian Gwaltney set up the scenario for the Panthers first strike. Gwaltney was fouled in the box by a heavy challenge and senior Ruben Rodriguez converted the PK in the 38th minute. The teams reconvened after half and the Panthers back line repelled the many attacks by the host Lakers. In the 78th minute, Kam Calhoun played a loose ball in from of the goal to senior Christian Garcia for the east tap in. The victory makes the Panthers 2-0-0 to start the season. Next up, a road trip to Bend, OR to play Summit and Bend high schools.
